Trump is using emergency wartime powers to hand $700M to the outdated coal industry. Clean energy is cheaper and more reliable, and propping up polluting coal plants hurts working families.

TAKE ACTION

Hi Ronald,

President Trump recently dropped the news that he’s using emergency wartime powers to hand nearly $700 million in taxpayer money to the dying coal industry.

He’s not lowering your energy bills (like he promised he would). He’s actively at war with the cheap, clean energy that would actually lower bills.

He’s bailing out coal plants that the market already left for dead.

➡️ $425 million to prop up 13 failing coal plants in 10 states

➡️ $75 million for a new coal export terminal in Oakland, CA

➡️ Nearly $200 million to build two new coal plants—the first in the U.S. since 2013—and restart another one in Maryland.

This is madness, and the only ones benefitting are corporate polluters.

Clean energy is already much cheaper to build, and is helping us build a more reliable electricity grid. According to Energy Innovation, 99% of U.S. coal plants now cost more to run than replacing them with new solar, wind, and battery storage.

We’re already seeing this farce play out in Michigan. Keeping one coal plant open that was slated to retire has cost families there $113 million—or $615,000 a day.

You already know that coal plants are bad for the climate and bad for our health—they’re also really bad for our pocketbooks.

At a time when basic necessities are rapidly becoming more expensive, we can’t afford to bail out coal barons. Tell Trump and his Department of Energy to stop forcing American families to prop up a dying industry.

Evergreen Executive Director Lena Moffitt said it plainly:“Every dollar he hands to coal is a dollar stolen from the cheap, clean solutions that could get us out of this mess. This is corporate welfare for polluters, paid for by the working families already drowning in an affordability crisis of Trump’s own making.”We need as many people as possible to speak up against this and send a clear message: We won’t pay to keep dangerous coal plants on life support.

This is madness, and the only ones benefitting are corporate polluters.
