Today, the Trump administration released its FY 2027 budget request, which cancels over $15 billion in Department of Energy clean energy investments, eliminates $4 billion in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure funding, and wipes out the Department of the Interior’s (DOI) renewable energy programs, including funding for the staff responsible for processing clean energy permits. The budget arrives as Trump’s illegal war in Iran continues to drive up gas prices for American families. In response, Evergreen Action Executive Director Lena Moffitt released the following statement:
“While Trump’s illegal war sends energy prices through the roof, his budget makes clear he has no intention of giving Americans any relief. Just this week, Trump told supporters at the White House that his administration cannot ‘take care of day care, Medicaid, [and] Medicare’ because ‘we’re fighting wars.’ Today’s budget confirms his administration won’t be trying to lower energy costs either—and will instead double down on enriching his Big Oil donors. His proposal cancels billions in investments that would put more affordable EVs and charging infrastructure within reach of American families. Trump is squeezing Americans at the gas station with one hand while eliminating the very tools that could free them from reliance on expensive fossil fuels with the other. All so his oil and gas donors can rake in record profits.
“And it gets worse. Trump’s budget would wipe out funding for the Interior Department staff who process renewable energy permits. At a time when electricity demand is surging, he isn’t even trying to pretend that his top priority is anything other than killing cheap, homegrown, clean energy. We desperately need more solar, wind, and battery storage on the grid, but Trump’s answer is to eliminate the people responsible for approving those projects. Every permit that doesn’t get processed is another clean energy project that doesn’t get built, another utility that cannot meet demand, and another price hike passed on to consumers. There’s no question that Trump is engineering an energy cost crisis. The only question is how long the American people tolerate it.”
