A Note From Our CEO

Heather ONeill

Heather O’Neill CEO & President

Today, our economy is running on more advanced energy resources than we’ve ever seen before. Advanced energy plays a critical role in keeping the lights on while reducing the need to invest in new, costly fossil infrastructure. Yet, we’ve only scratched the surface of the full potential of these resources working together. With the right policy and market reforms, advanced energy will bolster grid reliability and can be deployed faster than all other resources. That’s why we’re hearing more from leaders across states and business sectors. This week, United participated in the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Legislative Summit where we discussed how advanced energy is powering up small businesses and helping to put dollars back into local communities. Consumers, whether households, small or large businesses, face rising energy costs as the U.S. looks to update its aging infrastructure and meet growing load demand. We hear concerns about cost in every statehouse, business convening, and regulatory proceeding. I look forward to working with other business leaders as we seek policy and market reforms alongside renewed thinking and faster action around our energy system.

Policy Update

Down to the Wire: Clean Energy Legislation Amended at the Deadline in Virginia

This week, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin introduced poison pill amendments designed to harm several key pieces of legislation–HB 1883 and HB 2346–and weaken the Virginian Clean Economy Act (VCEA). United’s Jim Purekal called out the Governor’s attempt to engage in partisan politics rather than addressing energy affordability and reliability challenges by signing these bills into law. United hopes that the General Assembly will reject these amendments and continue pushing for meaningful energy reforms. Read more.>

RTO Insider: ISO-NE to Reopen Queue as it Continues to Wait on Ruling from FERC

RTO Insider reports that ISO-NE will reopen its interconnection queue on April 1, after it was closed last year due to delays in FERC’s ruling on its Order 2023 compliance proposal. While the RTO had paused work on interconnection reforms, continued uncertainty has led it to revert to the existing “first-come, first-serve” process. United’s Alex Lawton urged FERC to act quickly, warning that further delays could hinder the timely integration of new energy resources and increase costs for ratepayers. Read more.>
