My fellow Marylanders,
Last week, the Board of Public Works voted to make sure we grow our state’s economy through critical investments while taking an important step to maintain a balanced budget through targeted cuts.
From 2017 to 2022, the national economy grew by 11%. During that same time frame, Maryland’s economy grew by just 3%. Maryland was consistently falling behind other states on affordability, wages, population size and employment.
Meanwhile, spending ballooned, increasing by 70% during the seven years just before I took office. In short: We were spending, but we weren’t growing.
So, we took action to turn things around.
In our plan, we prioritize investments in health care and child care – because these investments will help us make Maryland more affordable and more competitive.
These changes are essential for both our short-term success and long-term growth – and they go hand-in-hand with a broader effort to get our house in order.
And here’s the good news: Our approach is already showing signs of success.
We have a long way to go to make sure our balance sheets start matching our ambition, but we’re on our way Maryland and we’re not stopping.

Supporting Clean Energy Job Creation to Help Grow Maryland’s Economy
This week, I announced more than $130 million in Climate Pollution Reduction Grants awards from the EPA to support the creation of thousands of new clean energy jobs. The grants will also support workforce training for local workers on emerging charging technology to make Maryland more competitive in electrifying the transportation sector.
New Cable Manufacturing Facility Coming to Baltimore
In another major update: Cenergy Holdings plans to establish a cable manufacturing facility here in Maryland. Their U.S. subsidiary, Hellenic Cables Americas, officially acquired property in Wagner’s Point, where it will support hundreds of direct and indirect jobs.
Awarding $6 million for New Projects through the Solar Energy Equity Program
These awards will generate new jobs, help families save money, and set Maryland on track to meet our clean energy goals. As I always say, it isn’t enough for people to see themselves in the consequences of climate inaction, people must also see themselves in the progress – and that’s what this partnership is about.
