President and CEO

Speaking at an event in Colorado last week, I told the crowd that electricity is the heartbeat of our economy, and if we cannot deliver it reliably, we all lose. Reliably delivering electricity requires increasing the capacity of our transmission system–to take the metaphor a step further, they’re the veins and arteries of our electric grid–and we do that by modernizing existing lines while also building new ones. Take the Western U.S., for example, where renewables, storage, and advanced geothermal all have tremendous potential, but the lack of transmission makes it challenging to move energy from generation sites to population centers. What’s needed are transmission projects that cross state lines (as well as a wholesale multi-state energy market to maximize the value of the energy produced), and that requires regional cooperation on solutions, where governors are working together to get infrastructure built and delivering benefits broadly. On stage with Governors Polis, Hobbs, and Lujan Grisham, I gave them kudos for their efforts to tackle these issues collaboratively across state lines and for being an example for others across the country. Governors are on the front lines of the energy affordability crisis, which is only going to be exacerbated by H.R. 1, and expanding transmission capacity is key to addressing that crisis by unlocking energy abundance.

Santa Cruz Sentinel: Opinion – Time for State to Join Regional Energy Market

In an opinion piece for the Santa Cruz Sentinel, United’s Leah Rubin Shen urges the California legislature to pass Senate Bill 540, which would allow California to join a West-wide regional energy market this year. She warns that failing to act could leave California isolated from the rest of the West. The benefits of joining such a market would save ratepayers $1B annually, improve grid reliability during extreme weather, and make better use of existing clean energy resources. Read more.>
